Couple and son stabbed to death in Lancaster
Lancaster (USA), SVM News, May 18, 2007: Three of a Christian family of the native of Lancaster were stabbed to death by an intruder in their suburban home on a street in an upper-middle-class neighbourhood of Manheim Township in Lancaster on 12th of May.
Thomas Alan Haines (50), Lisa Ann Haines (47) and their teenage son Kevin Haines (16), were the family members found stabbed to death on Saturday around 2 am.
The couple's daughter, Margaret Haines (20), known as Maggie, was home at the time and called 911 from a neighbor's house, police said. She was awakened by a noise and went into her parents' bedroom. There she found her father was lying on the bed and the mother sitting on it and asked her to leave the house and get help. But Maggie did not see an intruder.
Police authorities arrived minutes after receiving the 911 call and found the three victims dead inside the two-story stone house. The parents were in their bedroom, and the son was in a hallway.
"Autopsies showed they died of stab wounds. But no weapon was recovered," Chief Neil J. Harkins said.
The Haineses were the members of the Otterbein United Methodist Church and Thomas Haines had served as a trustee. Presently Rev. Robert Bailey is pastoring the Church.
Thomas Haines spent more than 20 years at Motion Industries as a salesman and branch manager. He set school running records at Manheim Township High School before joining the track and cross country teams at Slippery Rock University, from which he graduated in 1978.
Lisa Haines received a bachelor's degree in early childhood education from Elizabeth Town College in 1981.
"Lisa was a teacher at Lancaster Brethren Preschool and Sunday School," Jeffery B. Rill, Pastor at the Lancaster Church of the Brethren said to the Salem Voice Ministries (SVM) News Service.
Kevin Haines was a very bright Manheim Township High School sophomore who wrote for the school newspaper and was working toward becoming an Eagle Scout.
Maggie Haines was a 2005 graduate of Manheim Township and had just completed her sophomore year at Bucknell University. She returned home on Thursday.
Police found the Haineses' back door open when they responded to the 911 call. But Chief Neil Harkins would not say whether that was how the killer entered, but he noted that there were no signs of forced entry and that nothing was taken from the home.
The search warrant for the home was sealed, Lancaster County District Attorney Donald Totaro said.
Totaro said Maggie Haines has cooperated with investigators, and Harkins said investigators had no reason to believe she was involved in the killings.
Harkins said that police had no new breaks in the case and that investigators continued to pore through the victims' backgrounds, looking for clues. "Profilers with the FBI are expected to be in Lancaster to help with the investigation. They've just given us some tips on what we should be looking for," he added.
